Five AI music stories from the week of September 26 to October 2, 2026. Japanese band THE MOTEL reached number 1 on Japan’s iTunes Alternative chart with “NO” after a clip passed almost 15 million views on X, and commentator Mino claimed a 99.99% chance the song was made in Suno, while Taylor Swift’s “Patient Zero”, made with Max Martin and Shellback, was compared to a viral AI song about steel coils on trains. A November 2025 Deezer and Ipsos survey of 9,000 people in 8 countries found 97% could not tell fully AI-generated music from human-made music, which is why AI music detectors from Deezer, SubmitHub and Modulate matter more than the ear; Modulate raised $25 million and reports 95% precision across 76 genres without a published miss rate. Suno opened Speech in beta on October 1, 2026, a model that generates a spoken voice and its background music together, with Simple and Advanced modes, a custom script box, vocal gender, variety and a background music switch, and the first comments under Suno’s own tutorial ask for v5 and v4.5 back and compare the voices unfavourably with ElevenLabs, Respeecher and Descript. Federal prosecutors asked Judge John G. Koeltl for at least 46 months in prison for Michael Smith’s $8 million AI streaming fraud, which used up to 10,000 bot accounts on family plans, with sentencing on October 6, 2026. The Third Circuit ruled on September 29, 2026 in Thomson Reuters v. ROSS Intelligence that training AI on 2,243 Westlaw headnotes was not fair use, the first US appeals ruling on AI training, backed by the RIAA and NMPA, while Bartz v. Anthropic, Kadrey v. Meta, the Justice Department’s filing in the OpenAI case and GEMA’s July 2026 win against Suno in Munich show where the rest of the AI training fight stands. Kelly Clarkson told Las Culturistas that AI artists should have a separate chart, and SIQA’s Top 100 AI Songs chart has run weekly since January 2026, with The Second Voice at number 1 and Jason Derulo at number 4. I sit on SIQA’s Creative Advisory Council and do not run SIQA. I have not tested Suno Speech yet; the section reports Suno’s tutorial and announcement.
