Goldman Sachs’ 10th Music in the Air report, published October 15, 2026, forecasts global music industry revenue growing from $112.5 billion in 2025 to $198.1 billion in 2035 and recorded music from $31.7 billion to $56.1 billion, its first forecast upgrade since 2022, and estimates AI licensing, creation tools and new monetization could add about 10% to recorded music revenue by 2035. I walk through the math behind that number, a base case of 628 million paid subscribers in developed markets, 8% paying $11 a month for AI music tools and a 50% split to rights holders, worth $3.3 billion, plus Goldman’s warning on royalty pool dilution, the music most exposed to AI and what it means for independent artists and AI artists signing label deals, including Hallwood Media’s AI roster. YouTube Music started labelling AI-generated songs on October 14 with Fully Gen AI, Partly Gen AI and No Gen AI tags from distributors or its own detection, and Deezer announced on October 13 a switch that hides fully AI-generated music from search, with TIME naming its AI detector a Best Invention of 2026. DistroKid confirmed it removed recordings over Universal Music Group’s claims, artists including EZ Band, Fleur Seule, BASYL and Josh Sahunta say music came down with no warning, and on October 14 UMG and Sony asked a Manhattan federal court to make DistroKid disclose its AI upload data for their case against Suno, saying it delivered nearly 12 million tracks to one streaming service between March and September 2026. SVT received a record 4,077 songs for Melodifestivalen 2027 with no AI ban, NRK banned pure AI songs from Melodi Grand Prix and still found 30 to 50, and country singer Joe Nichols says artists who deny using AI are “lying through their teeth.”
